1. What is an ambient AI scribe?

An ambient AI scribe listens to the visit, with consent, and drafts the clinical note from the conversation for the provider to review, edit and sign. It differs from dictation, where the provider still composes the note aloud, and from transcript-to-note tools that structure an existing video-visit transcript.

The category has grown quickly, and the companies selling it fall into three groups: standalone scribe apps sold to individual clinicians, enterprise ambient platforms sold to health systems, and EHRs that build a scribe into the record. Each group prices differently, which is why the same question, what does an AI scribe cost, gets answers from zero to a sales call.

2. What do clinicians report after using ambient scribe technology?

In the most cited recent study, clinicians spent about a fifth less time in notes and cut after-hours work by 30%, with mixed opinions on accuracy. The study, Clinician Experiences With Ambient Scribe Technology to Assist With Documentation Burden and Efficiency, was published in JAMA Network Open in February 2025 (PubMed abstract).

Measure Before With the ambient scribe Change
Time in notes per appointment 10.3 min 8.2 min 20.4% less
Same-day appointment closure 66.2% 72.4% 9.3% more
After-hours work per workday 50.6 min 35.4 min 30.0% less
Ease of use (System Usability Scale) — Rated easy to use —
Open-ended feedback — Positive, negative and mixed —

Read it for what it is. It was a single-group, before-and-after quality improvement study of 46 clinicians from 17 specialties in the outpatient practices of one academic health system, run from April to June 2024, with no control group. The authors call for studies comparing multiple tools and examining the patient experience. It is good evidence that ambient scribing can return time; it is not evidence that any particular product will return that much time in your clinic.

For a small clinic the useful translation is minutes. At 2.1 minutes saved per appointment, a provider seeing 300 visits a month gets back about 10.5 hours a month. That is the figure to weigh against the price in the next two sections.

3. How are AI scribes priced?

Six pricing models are in use, and the unit matters more than the number. A per-clinician price with a note cap behaves very differently from an unlimited seat once your schedule fills.

Model How it works Suits Watch for
Free tier A capped allowance at no charge Trying the category The cap, and what happens to recordings and notes on it
Per clinician, capped notes A monthly price with a notes-per-month limit Low-volume or part-time providers The price of the next tier once you pass the cap
Per clinician, unlimited or fair use A monthly price with no cap, or a high fair-use cap Full schedules The fair-use number and the overage rate
Per hour or per note Billed on what you record Few, long visits Long intake visits get expensive quickly
Included in the EHR A seat comes with the EHR plan, extra seats priced Clinics that want the note in the chart Whether every provider gets a seat, or only one
Enterprise quote Negotiated per organisation, usually on contract Health systems and large groups Term length, minimum seats and integration fees

For how the three main models diverge by clinic type, see the pricing section of how to buy an AI medical scribe.

4. What do AI medical scribe companies charge? Published prices, November 2026

Most standalone scribe companies selling to individual clinicians publish a price; most enterprise ambient platforms do not. Every row below comes from the company’s own website on 1 November 2026. Where no price is published, the row says quote-based. Prices change often; check the linked page before you buy.

Company Sold as Published price, as read 1 Nov 2026 Source
Freed Standalone scribe Plans “starting at $39/mo”; Starter is 1 clinician with up to 40 notes a month, Core adds unlimited notes, Premier is listed at up to $119/mo; Groups priced on request; a 7-day trial getfreed.ai/pricing
Heidi Standalone scribe A free plan with one free seat and a usage allowance; the paid Clinician and Teams plans show no price (“talk to us”) heidihealth.com/pricing
Sunoh.ai Standalone scribe “Starting at $149 per user per month for a limited time” sunoh.ai/pricing
Abridge Enterprise ambient platform Quote-based; no price on its website abridge.com
Suki Ambient assistant Quote-based; no price on its website suki.ai
DeepScribe Ambient scribe Quote-based; no price on its website deepscribe.ai
Nabla Ambient assistant Quote-based; no price on its website nabla.com
Jane Scribe inside a practice management and EHR system AI Scribe $15/mo per opted-in practitioner for unlimited notes, or free with 5 notes jane.app/pricing
DrChrono Scribe inside an EHR Add-on on Foundation and Growth, part of Premium; no price published, plans are quoted drchrono.com/pricing
Aminova Scribe inside an EMR 1 seat included with Prescribing ($199/mo); extra seats $89/mo; fair use 100 scribed hours per seat per month, then $0.50 an hour aminova.health/pricing

Two cautions on reading the table. First, a scribe inside an EHR is priced on top of that EHR, so its add-on price is only comparable with a standalone scribe if you already use, or would choose, that EHR. Second, published starting prices are starting prices; the plan you need may be the next one up once you count notes per month or providers.

We have not tested these products and the table makes no claim about accuracy, specialty fit or integrations. It is a price table, not a ranking.

5. What does an AI scribe really cost per visit?

At a full schedule, a scribe subscription is usually cents per visit; the larger costs are the hidden lines around it. The published starting prices above, spread across a provider seeing 300 visits a month:

Monthly price per clinician Cost per visit at 150 visits/mo Cost per visit at 300 visits/mo
$15 $0.10 $0.05
$39 $0.26 $0.13
$89 $0.59 $0.30
$119 $0.79 $0.40
$149 $0.99 $0.50

Set against the 10.5 hours a month the study above implies at 300 visits, any of those prices is small. What moves the real cost is what the subscription does not show:

Hidden cost line Why it matters
Moving the note into the chart Copy and paste from a separate app costs minutes per visit, which eats the time the scribe saved
A second business associate agreement A standalone scribe handles recordings of patient conversations; it is another vendor to vet and sign with
Consent workflow Recording rules vary by state; someone has to ask, record the answer and stop the recording if a patient declines
Review time Every draft still needs a provider’s review before signing; a longer note can take longer to check
The cap A notes-per-month cap or fair-use limit turns a flat price into a variable one

The comparison with employing a person, line by line, is in AI scribe vs a human scribe.

6. Standalone AI scribe or one built into your EHR?

A standalone scribe wins when you will not change your EHR and it supports yours; a built-in scribe wins when you want the note to land in the chart with no second vendor.

Standalone scribe Scribe inside the EHR
Price Its own subscription, per clinician Included or an add-on to the EHR plan
Where the note lands In the scribe app, then moved or pushed to the EHR In the chart, on the visit
Vendors to vet Two One
Switching EHR later The scribe can come with you The scribe changes with the EHR
Best for A clinic happy with its EHR A clinic choosing an EHR now

The full version of this comparison, with the seat arithmetic for two-provider clinics, is in EMR with an AI scribe included vs paying separately. On Aminova, the scribe drafts a note from the visit for the provider to review, edit and sign; nothing is filed on its own. See the AI scribe page for how it works.

7. What should you get in writing before you buy an AI scribe?

Five pricing facts, in writing, settle most of the risk.

Ask Why
The unit: per clinician, per note, per hour or per seat Decides how the bill moves when your schedule grows
The cap and the overage rate The difference between the quoted price and the invoice
The term and the minimum seats Enterprise quotes often carry both
Whether a BAA is signed, and what happens to recordings Retention, deletion and whether audio is used to train models
What happens to notes if you cancel Notes kept only inside the scribe app should be exportable

8. Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI medical scribe cost?
As published in November 2026, standalone AI scribe companies that list a price start at $39 to $149 per clinician per month, some offer a capped free tier, and enterprise platforms are quote-based. Some EHRs include a scribe seat: Aminova includes one with Prescribing and sells extra seats at $89 a month.

What are the main AI medical scribe companies?
Standalone scribes sold to individual clinicians include Freed, Heidi and Sunoh.ai, which publish prices or a free tier. Abridge, Suki, DeepScribe and Nabla do not publish prices on their websites. Several EHRs, including Jane, DrChrono and Aminova, offer a scribe inside the record.

What is an ambient scribe?
An ambient AI scribe listens to a visit, with the patient’s consent, and drafts the clinical note from the conversation. The provider reviews, edits and signs it.

Do ambient scribes actually save clinicians time?
In a 2025 JAMA Network Open study of 46 clinicians at one academic health system, time in notes per appointment fell from 10.3 to 8.2 minutes and after-hours work fell 30%. It had no control group, and clinicians’ views on accuracy were mixed.

Is an AI scribe priced per provider or per visit?
Both exist, along with per-hour, capped-notes, free-tier and enterprise models. Ask for the unit, the cap and the overage rate in writing, because those three decide the bill.

Is a scribe included in an EMR cheaper than a standalone one?
Often, if you are choosing the EMR anyway, because there is no second subscription or vendor and the note lands in the chart. If you are keeping your current EHR, compare the standalone price with the time spent moving notes.
